My feathered friend this week is a young grouse I saw crossing the highway. Luckily the bird made it safely across without being hit by a vehicle.
A lot of apple trees on the property are not good eating apples but the grouse eat them. Insects, twigs, buds and conifer needles are part of their diet.
Hunters kill many grouse each year. The hunting season is for a month in the fall. I don鈥檛 like to think of the grouse being shot. Here they are also food for the coyotes and foxes.
This grouse doesn鈥檛 mind the snow as he walks across the back yard in winter.
