The outcome of the Alabama senate race seems a wake up call for the US. The good people of Alabama chose Doug Jones and I have to say, this causes me to feel a little hopeful. Since the election of Trump, in order to fend off despair, I have held to the hope that there are enough good people in America who, if mobilized, would out-number the fearful, misinformed voters who put Trump in office (OK, it was the electoral college, but the voters didn't help.) And Alabama proved this right, in a district which hasn't elected a Democrat in many years. So encouraging!
Now if only a strong, progressive third party can develop, or Democrats get their shit together. Hey Dems, listen to Nomiki Konst, will you?! I believe that the majority of Americans are better than the small-minded, racist, homophobic, misogynistic, misinformed, fearful folks who support our current Disaster in Chief. Alabama proved that good-hearted Americans are out there, ready to be heard and to take change. It's time, nationally, for more people of color, women, LGBTQ and others to mobilize, run for office, and be involved. And Alabama just may have led the way.
