Before dawn
when stars brightly pierce wispy clouds
and cool air like spring water
washes over sleepy shoulders
the coyotes sing

First one voice, whining, wild
others join high pitched, frantic
blending accidental harmonies
an insane choir

The mad pipe organ sound moves me to stillness
listening as the final chord fades to silence
no applause

Almost 25 years ago I was living in a little mother-in-law cottage as I regrouped after leaving an unhealthy marriage. My little home was west of town, among hills, sheep ranches and forest. Lying in bed with my cat Mac, the sound of coyotes was new to both of us. I learned to love the alien beauty of their song and was inspired to write the verse above.1290308270127.jpg
