Deslave en Tejerías, Venezuela
Octubre 2022

During several days of the month of October this year several downpours have fallen in the Venezuelan territory, particularly in the State of Aragua, with the consequent flooding and overflowing of rivers and streams that have caused dozens of loss of life and hundreds of homes affected. These natural processes occur from time to time during exceptionally wet years. What are the causes of the phenomenon and why they generate so much loss of life? Briefly I will try to explain it. In the first place, it is the formation of clouds loaded with a lot of humidity in the high parts of the mountains, which cause torrential downpours for days in a row, falling in a few hours the amount of water that in normal times falls spread over several months of the year.
This volume of water flows down the slope dragging rocks, branches, tree trunks and large amounts of mud that sweep away whatever they get in their path, causing what is usually called a landslide. What other factors cause these landslides? Apart from the natural fact there are other causes that cause disasters with loss of life.
In the first place, deforestation in the upper watersheds that leaves the soil uncovered, easier to be removed by rainwater; these deforestations occur when building roads, digging mines or destroying forest vegetation to establish crops with little soil cover such as vegetables.
On the other hand, human populations build their urban settlements near the banks of natural riverbeds and streams and at the end of the slope where the rivers discharge the materials they carry and where they have formed alluvial cones of little slope where houses are built.
The river resumes its major flood channel when there is an excess of water in its normal course and that is when overflows and landslides occur. What precautions can be taken to reduce the tragedy caused by these events? National and local authorities should have and implement urban land use planning so that there is a safer location of population settlements and maintain a system of environmental alerts to minimize the risk of these tragedies.
People in general should try not to locate their homes on the banks of watercourses or on the alluvial cones that form at the end of them in order to avoid the collapse of their homes and, worse still, loss of life during these natural events. Another practice that people should follow is to avoid trips or excursions to the countryside and not to bathe in rivers during the rainy season, when rivers and streams can flood. On the other hand we must heed the warning calls of the civil protection authorities. And do not think that we will never happen to us or that the risk is very low, because the human being always optimistic lives at the foot of volcanoes or on the fault of San Andres without thinking about the possible consequences.
