I don't care what anybody said - this WAS a competition.
You can't put 30+ people together all doing the same thing in different ways and not expect them to compare results. If nothing else, thet wanted bragging rights. Joe beat Mary who beat Pete who beat Jane and so forth.
If that is not a competition, I don't know what is. Just because there was no trophy, no prize of any kind, it was a competion.
