I am still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up. I was mulling over options, thinking about what I enjoy, possibilities, etc. when I remembered a scene from the hilarious movie “Office Space.” The guys at their unrewarding, dead-end jobs were talking about life and work and such and one mentions that in High School the teacher asked them to write down what they would do if they had a million dollars. Some of the guys start tossing out ideas when one of them puts the brakes on the conversation and says-”you're missing the point, the idea is that whatever you come up with, then that is the career you should pursue. Of course that is B.S. since if we actually could do whatever we wanted then we would have no janitors, no garbage collectors, its just B.S.”
He did have a point however I don't think we just have to settle for whatever method of making a living that we happen to fall into. I believe we can all be more intentional about it, and take actions that get us closer to making a living while pursuing passions.
The photos sprinkled throughout this post are representative of some of my passions. I love storytelling, through writing, video productions and photography. I'm finding that I like to tell real stories about life, about people. I love to capture life as it happens.
I am particularly drawn to telling the stories of performers, creators and those who give of themselves to make the world a better place. Capturing these people in action does three things; it encourages them, promotes them, and gives me a chance to learn from them.
I do make some money as a professional videographer and photographer but the overwhelming majority of what I share in posts such as these are from work that I've done for free.
Anyhow, I will continue to capture life as it happens and promote people who are doing something good. I have faith that I will work this into an activity that generates income proportional to my services.
This may be a good time to explain the cryptic title of this post. Most people settle, much like the contents of the processed and boxed foods that too many of us buy. People, like potato chips, usually settle. I did for awhile but it was just too hard for me to follow the prepackage cookie-cutter career path. I had to carve out something different. The results have been mostly good. I get to do some of the most creative engineering work of anyone I know. I get to run my own life, no one owns me. Yes, I do have to serve my client's needs but no single one of them dictates my schedule. It is not without its difficulties but it allows me time to produce movies, a video blog, these Steemit posts, do photography and videography work, lead a meetup group, etc.
My contents won't settle. Thank you for reading. I hope you can get out and enjoy life!
