🦉 The lesser spotted woodpecker (Picoides minor , synonym of Dryobates minor)

This little woodpecker is much rarer for me than his big counterparts. Most often I meet them in autumn, as part of a mixed bird flock.
They deftly move along the branches of trees in search of food. Sometimes they can be seen on the trunks of diseased rotten trees with loose bark.

I met this dude in the autumn at the old cemetery. He examined the broken branches of trees, and found something in them.

You know what's funny. Big woodpeckers look for insects on tree trunks, but do not touch branches. And the small woodpecker, on the contrary, examines the branches but not the trunks of the trees. And thus the trees are spared from harmful insects from all parts.
