                                                              OSTEOPOROSIS

Osteoporosis is a disease related to bones. In this condition the bones become fragile with an increased susceptibility to fracture .In this disease the bone density decreases.

CAUSES

  1. This condition occurs due to lack in vitamin d and calcium intake
  2. Lack of exercise
  3. Malnutrition
  4. It is also seen in chronic alcoholics and chain smokers

VITAMIN D AND CALCIUM MECHANISM

No matter how much we take calcium if there is a lack of vitamin d in our body our body will not utilize any calcium. So vitamin d is a must for absorbing the calcium from our intestine.

This disease is quiet common in females after menopause.Due to decrease in blood calcium level PARATHYROID HORMONE tries to maintain the blood calcium level back to normal by dissolving calcium from bones. So this process makes small pores in long bones in our body hence decreasing its density and they become fragile.

PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE

  1. Regular exercise.
  2. Healthy diet.Include calcium rich food in your diet.
  3. Our body can naturally synthesize vitamin d by exposure to sunlight
  4. Healthy life style
  5. Regular checkup(once in an year) of bone density after the age of 35 years
