Ting is a pay as you go service provider with no long term contracts. They are actually owned by TuCows which has been around for a while as a download site for freeware and shareware. I have been using Ting for about 5 years and I love their pricing and service. I have 3 kids so we have had 3 or 4 phones with them during that time. The best part of their service is you only pay for the minutes, messages and data that you use. It is a shared data plan, but if your family is like mine, most of my kids data usage is when they have WiFi, so there are no cell data charges.
Here is their cost structure so if you know what your monthly usage is, you can calculate your bill:
My average bill for 4 phones on this plan is about $80 per month. For 3 phones it was usually around $65 per month. The only issues we have had are when one of my kids goes off WiFi and watches videos. In that case, you pay $10/GB when you exceed 2GB. That's still a really good deal.
The most important consideration is coverage. They don't come right out and say it, but if you buy a CDMA phone you will be using the Sprint network and if you choose a GSM phone, you will be using AT&T. As long as you have good service with Sprint or AT&T in your area, Ting can work for you. You can check your coverage here: https://ting.com/coverage
Phones: You need to buy a phone or bring one to be reconfigured. You can buy from them, which is the easiest path or purchase an unlocked phone elsewhere. There are instructions about bringing your own phone on the website: https://ting.com/byod
What I like: The service, the rates, the customer service (their chat line is tremendous and they email you a copy of the whole chat session when you are done), you can quit at any time.
What I don't like: Coverage for us is not as good as Verizon, but it is fine 95% of the time.
We have used Ting for 5 years and I love their rates. $80 per month for 4 lines is hard to beat! Most competitors start at $35 per line.
If you use tons of data, then Ting is not for you. Otherwise, check them out and save some money.
