15 December 2023, @mariannewest’s Freewrite Writing Prompt Day 2221: grind the corn
My siblings and I used to be quite anxious to assist our mother in whatever way we could when we were younger. With a sparkle in her eyes, my mother beckoned us into the kitchen one bright morning.
My mother handed us the bucket full of corn and said, "Today I need you both to go to the market and grind the corn for our pap."
As we started the mission, we were full of excitement. When we arrived at the market, we noticed a tiny booth with a maize mill. We went up to the stall owner since we were so curious.
"Can we try grinding the maize ourselves?" Anticipating with shining eyes, we asked.
Grinning, the gracious stall owner gave us the handle. We enthusiastically took turns attempting to replicate the fluid movements we had seen my mother perform innumerable times. But the outcomes of our efforts were not entirely consistent. The grinding was far from ideal, and the maize kernels flew in every direction.
We gave the handle back to the stall owner, embarrassed, and he laughed heartily. "My youthful buddies, it takes practice to grind maize. Over the years, your mother's hands have honed the craft to perfection."
We picked up the maize after thanking the stall owner. We couldn't help but laugh at our botched attempt as we headed back home.
Using the maize we had acquired, we cooked the pap together when we returned home. We discovered as we enjoyed the hot and cosy dinner around the table that the memories and laughs we had made in the market had made it taste even better.
We all chuckle at the day's events going forward and remember them whenever we take pap.
