Going to the local market every now and then is a great experience for me. This day I went with my wife to get some fish in the fish section. We saw calamari or squid were sold by the merchants in the market. It's been a long time since we had calamari so we decided to buy a little bit.
It's not that hard to buy fish or calamari since we live close by the sea. We have many people working as fishermen. But then when the weather is bad, nobody dare to go to the sea. Then the price of fish would go high. It's all about supply and demand.
We bought a quarter of a kilogram of calamari and paid 20,000 rupiah or abut 1.4 USD. You can't eat too many calamari, it's not good for you, my wife justifying we did not buy more. But it was a pretty fair price for the calamari.
Well, whatever she said is fine. A happy wife is a happy life.
Cut the story short. At home, she cleansed those poor calamari and cut them in 3 into smaller pieces.
Then she prepared the ingredients. She said she was going to make spicy sweet sour calamari. Wow, my taste bud would become so confused with the different tastes blending together.
She chopped few garlic, leeks and onion and stir fried them in palm oil.
While frying the garlic, onion and leeks, she said, "We fry all the ingredients just a moment, and when the aroma is good, we can put the calamari in the pan as well."
Oh, I see.
And as she finish talking, she took the calamari and put them in the frying pan together with the rest of ingredients. She stirred the cooking so everything is mixed well.
Next, she added chopped tomatoes. It was just only three tomatoes that we also bought from the market. And these guys where the reason why the food is called spicy sweet sour calamari, because of their sour taste (not that much, though).
Later, she also added sweet soy sauce, chopped chili, sea salt, and oyster sauce. The first and the second is the reason why the calamari become sweet and spicy.
Then we waited for a few more minutes. And finally, it was ready. She poured the spicy sweet sour calamari in a bowl, saying. "You can't have to many of it."
Well, whatever she said. A happy wife is a happy life. Did I mention this before?
I don't care. The taste was sooo great!!
