The best advice that I've ever received is "think for yourself first after that for the others because when you became old no one will come to thank you for the help that you did".
This advice is on the one hand good and the other hand bad. I believe in the good in people and when I see somebody suffers I try to help him/her. Yeah, this doesn't end well all the time, but when I can help at least one person I am happy.
In this life, we must be at some points a kinda selfish, because helping others all the time costs a lot from our time, money, and headaches to figure out how to get out that guy from the mud.
The saddest thing is that the people that I have helped the most, didn't appreciate it at all. They thought that I am obliged to do it. Which was not right. I did it because I wanted and I had the knowledge to do it. I had many examples from my previous work on how much people are ungrateful.
