SteemWorld.org shows that I’ve made 999 posts so far in my 2+ years (“29 moons”) of wandering through Steemlandia.
What might that have to do with a picture of helicopters, people with rifles, and a bit of snow? Not really anything other than that I’d gone to Pixabay and searched for “1000” hoping to find a pic of a cake with candles for a Thousand Year Old Man. But when I got there and found the helicopters as a search result for “1000” (huh?), my mind wandered off into the weeds and I thought about The 2000 Year Old Man, a comedy sketch by Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks which had its origin in the discomfort Brooks experienced after surgery for his gout. So, yeah, I’m going to ramble even more than I usually do in this post. You’ve been warned.
My mind wanders a lot. Maybe that’s part of why after having done 999 posts and now writing this 1000th, I’ve yet to find a niche. Okay, if I haven’t by now, I probably never will. So much has changed since I started here and I’m not even one of The Old Ones (mine was the 143,462nd account created on the Steem blockchain). Even though I’m not a blockchain developer, there was a time when I thought I knew my way around the block(chain). But now things are evolving so fast that I can’t keep up. Even @exyle who’s way more knowledgeable about developments here has said that he’s having a hard time keeping up with them. This truly is “the blockchain of opportunity”.
HF21 is coming down the pike, an inexorable force. And the closer it gets, I find myself caring less and less about how it might affect me personally. My gut feeling is that it’s trying to do too many thing simultaneously but that’s just a gut feeling. And I also find myself letting go and no longer caring much about what Post X will pay out after 7 days because it really doesn’t matter. What matters is where the Steem blockchain is five years from now, ten years from now.
There are basically three possibilities: it could crash and burn, it could muddle along, or it could be wildly successful.
Of the three, muddle along is probably the least likely. The stock market analogy is that instead of becoming an Apple or an Alphabet, it becomes one of those middling Russell 2000 stocks. Meh.
It could crash and burn. Some technical disaster that even a distributed network can’t handle. Totalitarian bankster/government crackdown. The Bavarian Illuminati lizard people overlords emerge victorious.
Or it could be wildly successful. Millions of use cases thriving in Steemlandia. If that happens, all of us here now will have done just fine. Someone here (@gtg?) mentioned a future where we could have a meal in a fine restaurant and pay with an upvote. Why stop there?
But for now, I’ll just plod ahead. And maybe do post Number 1,001 tomorrow.
