Our family trip to Spain continued with a very different kind of adventure: a full day at Bioparc Valencia, an African themed zoo built right inside the city's beautiful Turia Gardens. This time my wife and son came along for what turned out to be one of the best days of the whole trip.
A nossa viagem em fam铆lia por Espanha continuou com um tipo de aventura muito diferente: um dia inteiro no Bioparc Valencia, um jardim zool贸gico com tem谩tica africana constru铆do dentro dos bel铆ssimos Jardins do Turia. Desta vez, a minha mulher e o meu filho vieram connosco para aquele que acabou por ser um dos melhores dias de toda a viagem.
Before even reaching the entrance, this huge metal elephant sculpture caught our eye. Standing tall against the clear blue sky, its wood and iron body is a great warm up for what waits inside: a park built entirely around elephants, giraffes and everything else you would expect from an African savanna.
Ainda antes de chegarmos 脿 entrada, esta enorme escultura de elefante em metal chamou a nossa aten莽茫o. Erguendo-se imponente contra o c茅u azul, o seu corpo de madeira e ferro 茅 um 贸timo aperitivo para o que nos espera l谩 dentro: um parque constru铆do inteiramente em torno de elefantes, girafas e tudo o mais que se espera de uma savana africana.
Once inside, the African savanna area did not disappoint. Huge boulders and a dry looking baobab tree set the scene, and it did not take long before we spotted our first elephants moving calmly between the rocks.
Uma vez l谩 dentro, a 谩rea da savana africana n茫o desiludiu. Enormes rochas e um embondeiro de aspeto seco compunham o cen谩rio, e n茫o demorou muito at茅 avistarmos os nossos primeiros elefantes a moverem-se calmamente entre as rochas.
A short walk further and we found ourselves right next to a small herd resting in the shade of that same giant baobab. Seeing them this close, with no bars or fences breaking the view, is exactly what makes Bioparc special.
Uma curta caminhada em frente e encontramo-nos mesmo ao lado de um pequeno rebanho descansando 脿 sombra daquele mesmo embondeiro gigante. V锚-los t茫o de perto, sem grades ou veda莽玫es a interromper a vista, 茅 exatamente o que torna o Bioparc especial.
The paths between exhibits are almost as pretty as the animals themselves. Palm trees and hanging branches line the walkways, so every turn feels like stepping deeper into a different continent.
Os caminhos entre os recintos s茫o quase t茫o bonitos como os pr贸prios animais. Palmeiras e ramos pendentes ladeiam as passarelas, de modo que cada curva d谩 a sensa莽茫o de estar a entrar num continente diferente.
From one of the viewpoints we got this wide shot of the open savanna, with an ostrich, a giraffe, small antelope and a few ibises sharing the same grassy hill. It is a huge enclosure and the animals really do roam freely across it.
De um dos miradouros, conseguimos esta foto panor芒mica da savana aberta, com uma avestruz, uma girafa, pequenos ant铆lopes e alguns 铆bis a partilhar a mesma colina relvada. 脡 um recinto enorme e os animais circulam realmente livremente por ele.
A little further along, a wooden lookout gave us a closer view over the giraffe area, with the palm trees and thatched roofs of the African village style buildings in the background.
Um pouco mais 脿 frente, um miradouro de madeira proporcionou-nos uma vista mais aproximada da zona das girafas, com as palmeiras e os telhados de palha das constru莽玫es em estilo de aldeia africana como pano de fundo.
One of the most curious corners of the park is this water tank, part of the Kitum Cave area, where fish swim while small rock dwelling mammals move along the far bank. My son pressed his face right against the glass to watch the fish go by.
Um dos cantos mais curiosos do parque 茅 este tanque de 谩gua, parte da 谩rea da Gruta Kitum, onde os peixes nadam enquanto pequenos mam铆feros que vivem nas rochas se movem ao longo da margem oposta. O meu filho encostou a cara ao vidro para observar os peixes a passar.
More palm lined paths took us further into the park, with a pair of ducks resting by one of the many little ponds scattered through the reserve.
Mais caminhos ladeados por palmeiras levaram-nos mais para o interior do parque, com um casal de patos a descansar num dos muitos pequenos lagos espalhados pela reserva.
Overhead, a group of dark ibises rested on the rocks inside one of the aviary areas, half hidden by the trees and the fine netting that keeps the birds safely inside the park.
Em cima, um grupo de 铆bis-escuros repousava sobre as rochas dentro de uma das 谩reas do avi谩rio, parcialmente escondidos pelas 谩rvores e pela fina rede que mant茅m as aves em seguran莽a dentro do parque.
Looking up through the branches we caught another pair of the same birds, perched high on a rock ledge, enjoying the shade on a hot morning.
Olhando por entre os ramos, avistamos outro casal da mesma ave, empoleirado no cimo de uma sali锚ncia rochosa, aproveitando a sombra numa manh茫 quente.
This cattle egret clearly felt right at home. It landed on the railing next to the restaurant, only a couple of meters from our table, and stayed there long enough for a proper close up.
Esta gar莽a-vaqueira sentiu-se claramente em casa. Ela pousou no corrim茫o junto ao restaurante, a apenas alguns metros da nossa mesa, e ficou l谩 o tempo suficiente para um close-up perfeito.
Further along the path, hanging vines framed a quiet green clearing scattered with boulders and an old fallen trunk, one of many peaceful corners where the animals can rest away from the main walkways.
Mais adiante no trilho, lianas pendentes emolduravam uma clareira verde e tranquila, salpicada de pedras e um velho tronco ca铆do, um dos muitos recantos pac铆ficos onde os animais podem descansar longe das vias principais.
The trail curved past more of the thatched roof buildings that give the whole park its African village feel, with a small group of antelope grazing in the distance.
O trilho serpenteava por entre mais constru莽玫es com telhados de colmo, que conferem ao parque um ar de aldeia africana, com um pequeno grupo de ant铆lopes a pastar ao longe.
A little closer to the restaurant area, three antelope wandered right across the open grass, completely unbothered by the visitors watching from the path.
Um pouco mais perto da zona do restaurante, tr锚s ant铆lopes deambulavam pela relva aberta, completamente alheios aos visitantes que os observavam a partir do trilho.
Another view of the same winding trail, this time with a couple of ducks strolling along the sandy edge of the pond.
Outra vista do mesmo trilho sinuoso, desta vez com um casal de patos a passear pela margem arenosa do lago.
One of the most striking birds we saw all day was this saddle billed stork, wading along the shoreline with its bright red and black beak reflecting in the water.
Uma das aves mais impressionantes que vimos durante todo o dia foi esta cegonha-de-bico-de-sela, a caminhar pela margem com o seu bico vermelho e preto brilhante a refletir na 谩gua.
Nearby, a reddish brown buffalo grazed quietly on the sandy ground near its rocky den, keeping mostly to itself under the shade of the trees.
Perto dali, um b煤falo castanho-avermelhado pastava tranquilamente no ch茫o arenoso perto da sua toca rochosa, mantendo-se praticamente isolado sob a sombra das 谩rvores.
We ended our visit at the chimpanzee island, watching the group move between the rocks and the little waterfall while other visitors gathered around to do the same. It was the perfect last stop for a day that had already given us so much.
Termin谩mos a nossa visita na ilha dos chimpanz茅s, observando o grupo a movimentar-se entre as rochas e a pequena cascata, enquanto outros visitantes se reuniam para fazer o mesmo. Foi a paragem final perfeita para um dia que j谩 tanto nos tinha proporcionado.
Bioparc Valencia turned out to be one of those places that works just as well for a four year old as it does for the adults. My son ran from one enclosure to the next without ever losing interest, and I do not think we have taken this many wildlife photos in a single day in a long time. If you are ever in Valencia with family, this one is well worth the ticket.
O Bioparc Valencia revelou-se um daqueles locais que agradam tanto a crian莽as de quatro anos como a adultos. O meu filho correu de um recinto para o outro sem perder o interesse em momento algum, e acho que j谩 h谩 algum tempo que n茫o tir谩vamos tantas fotografias de animais selvagens num 煤nico dia. Se estiver em Val锚ncia com a fam铆lia, vale muito a pena o bilhete.
