We've had heavy snow covering the ground and sticking to the branches of the trees. This bought flocks of grosbeaks looking for food and they found it in the seed on our lilac bushes.
Their bright yellow and red plumage livened up the landscape and they had a cheery little chirp which brightened up the day also!

It is the male birds that carry the bright colors while the female is more subdued as you can see in the picture of a pair of pine grosbeaks below...

The pine grosbeak has the red coloring while the evening grosbeaks have the yellow coloring. I kind of thought it would be the other way around with the red of the sunsets in the evening. I'm not sure how they got their names.

To help them digest those seeds the grosbeaks were eating gravel from the road and a Spruce Grouse came walking slowly across.

I think it is time to fill the bird feeders for it is getting harder for the birds to find food with all that snow. I like to start feeding them early so they will know where the feeder is when it starts to get really cold! The birds will need extra fuel to keep warm and help them make it through the harsh winters.

I hoped you enjoyed seeing the grosbeaks as much as I did seeing them flock into our yard!
