Greetings to all Splinterlands players! this is my entry for Battle Mage Secrets Challenge this is a popular event held by Splinterlands every week. The theme today is Briar Patch. This is the Challenge we must follow :
The battle happen in the Modern Format Champion League, I played with my scholar account from Balthazar.
The guide presents a strategy on how to advance through the ranks by utilizing reasonably priced or cheap-to-rent monsters that can still prove effective.

From left to right :
Stampede, the Trample ability can trigger multiple times per attack if the trampled monster is killed
Holy Protection, all monsters have the Divine Shield ability.
Briar Patch, all monsters have the Thorns ability.
Mana Cap 54
Can choose the element water, Earth, Life, and Dragon.
We will first talk a bit about the ruleset :
In this battle, we decide to use a melee monster with the opportunity ability which is the monster's Deeplurker to surprise the enemy, usually in Briar Patch ruleset many player will try not to use melee, they sometimes not prepared for battle against melee monster.
Our enemy lineup :
This is our lineup from left (first position) to right (last position) :
| Summoner/monster and Abilities | Description |
|---|---|
| Quix the Devious (summoner), has the ability to decrease range attack and speed all enemy monsters by 1 | I used this summoner so I can use the Chaos Dragon monster from Dragon element |
| Baakjira, 1st position, Tanker, has Void, Slow, Strengthen, and Heal. | Placed in the first position because it has a large HP, Void ability will reduce damage from magic by half. Has a heal ability that can restore HP at the start of each round. Another ability is also useful in this battle. Strengthen ability will increase all of our monsters' HP by 1, and the slow ability will reduce the speed of all enemy monsters by 1. The ruleset this time is that Briar Patch will make it difficult for melee-type monsters to carry out attacks with Void from Baakjira, so there are only arrow attacks left that we have to watch out for. This monster can't attack. |
| Deeplurker 2nd position, Attacker, has the ability to poison, demoralize, and Opportunity. | Placed in 2nd place because in my opinion, it's quite safe here because Baakjira has a very large HP. With a large Attack of 5, and a poison ability that will give a poison effect with a 50% success rate to enemy monsters. Monsters affected by poison will decrease by 2 in each round. This monster can attack from any position because it has the ability opportunity to attack monsters with the lowest HP. Has another useful ability, namely Demoralize, with this ability, will reduce melee damage to all enemy monsters by 1. |
| Merdaali Guardian, 3rd position, Support, has the ability, Tank Heal, Repair, and Strengthen. | This monster is used to restore HP and armor from Baakjira. So that Baakjira can survive as long as possible from enemy attacks. Strengthen will increase the HP of all friendly monsters by 1. |
| Chaos Dragon, 4th position, attacker, has the ability Flying, Scattershot, Blast, and Blind. | Placed in the fourth position to be safe from enemy attacks, because the Chaos Dragon has great magic damage. Coupled with the ability blast, the attacks from this monster hit the monsters around the monsters being attacked, perfect for removing the protection from the divine shield ability. Flying increases the chance of dodging melee and ranged attacks by 25%. Likewise, the Blind ability applies to all friendly monsters, increasing the chance of avoiding melee attacks and range by 15%. |
| Angelic Mandarin, 5th position, attacker and support, has the ability to Triage, and Silence. | This is the best match for monsters with the ability to taunt in the water element. With a fairly large HP, the ability silence can reduce magic damage by 1. And the most important ability it has is Triage. Can heal the HP of monsters that are not in the first position. |
| Wave Brood, 6th Position, Attacker and Tanker, has the abilities Taunt, Close range, Void, and Return Fire. | Wave Brood, a favorite monster with ability taunt that is widely used in the element water. The Taunt ability makes all enemy monsters attack this monster when they can. Void is an ability that can reduce mage damage by 50 percent. Return Fire will return damage from range type monsters. With Void and Return Fire, we only need to worry about melee type enemy attacks. Even though this monster is a range type, it can attack in first position thanks to its Close range ability. The main goal of this monster is to share damage with our monster in the first position so both tankers can stay alive longer which makes the other monsters in charge of attacking can stay alive as long as possible. |
Round 1 :
The battle begins with buffs and debuffs from both sides. Overall speed our monster is greater than the enemy.
Our Side :
Deeplurker activated the ability poison while attacking Myvelic Splitswan
Enemy Side :
no monsters die in this round
Round 2 :
Our Side :
No monsters die.
Enemy Side :
Mycelic Slipspawn was killed by Wave Brood
Round 3 :
Rounds 4-5 :
I skip to round 5 because no monsters die in round 4
Our Side :
No Monsters Die.
Enemy Side :
Rounds 6-7 :
Rounds 8-10 :
Our side :
Enemy side :
Rounds 11-14
On the enemy, side left Goblin Psychic and Runi vs our side have Baakjira, Chaos Dragon, and Angelic Mandarin. The monsters attack each other until at round 12 our Baakjira die attacked by Runi and at round 13 the enemy Monster Runi and Goblin Psychic die together because attacked by Chaos Dragon and receive the effect of the blast.
Runi activates the Resurrected ability and dies again in Round 14, with Runi's death victory is on our side.
Our strategy for using Melee in the Briar Patch ruleset is quite successful, we can quickly kill 2 monsters in the backline. I hope that Angelic Mandarin can heal the Deeplurker, but it never happen. Angelic Mandarin busy healing the Wave Brood who have greater decrease in the HP.
Even though we prepared a surprise attack using melee, I was even more surprised because the enemy used a melee monster that was quite expensive, the enemy used Runi which has the Reflection Shield ability so it is immune to the effects of Thorns. and also Arkemis the Bear who can give armor +2 to all friendly monsters, plus the summoner immortalis who give shatter to all monsters, the enemy monsters can easily destroy armor of any size.
The enemy made a mistake by bringing Legionnaire Alvar making Deeplurker's attack reduced by 1 so that it reduced from 5 damage to 4, making Mycelic Slipspawn's Forcefield ability not work. The Forcefield ability makes all attacks of 5 or more only deal 1 damage.
Enemies don't bring Triage to restore mycelic Slipspawn's HP so they die easily. With the death of mycelic Slipspawn, our monster attacks can go in various directions according to their respective attack abilities. Meanwhile, the enemy is still busy attacking our Wave Brood. After the enemy killed Wave Brood we still have Baakjira who is very hard to kill as a tanker in the first position, until he got affliction by Goblin psychic so he can't heal anymore. Baakjira relies on high HP and only 1 armor, so the enemy's Shatter ability is not very useful.
