I've always admired wood work and design, so I was beyond excited when my friend who loves to work with wood offered to show me around the wood shop at my Makerspace. A makerspace is an amazing space with all sorts of workshops, machines, and awesome creators. I actually do my pottery in the ceramics section there. I will be writing more on Makerspace on a later post - it is a really neat place.

I got to play with a variety of power tools at the wood shop! Pretty cool, but a little scary I'll admit!

My friend asked me what I was interested in making out of wood. After searching through pinterest for ideas of something that I could make for my first project. I decided on a cutting board! I saw these photographs of cutting boards with beautiful organic shapes and used that as my inspiration.

To make this cutting board, I used a planer machine, a table saw (ok, my friend did this one for me because I didn't have the guts), a jig saw, drill, and the automatic sander. My favorite machine to use was the jig saw machine ( I believe it's called that). I first drew the shape of the drawing board on the walnut wood before cutting the shape using the small jigsaw blade.

After making the wood flat, cutting it down, cutting the shape, drilling the hole, and sanding the wood. The cutting board was finally ready to be oiled and treated. Treating the wood with the oil and conditioner helps seal the porous wood. I applied about 3 layers of each!

I was really quite pleased with how it turned out - I wasn't sure what to expect! It was really fun to learn some wood shop, and I hope to do some more wood projects in the future.
