Garden Journal December 2021.png

Well the garden is just about barren for the year, with the exception of the herbs that will hang on for a bit longer. As usual, I had high hopes to actually get some things in the ground to capitalize on the autumn growing season, but, best laid plans and all that. Thankfully my farmers are much better prepared than I. So while we may not have much to enjoy from our own backyard, they're keeping the refrigerator stocked up with all the cruciferous goodness, crisp leafies, and glorious roots I can handle!

We did get our final crop of the year dug up--a golden harvest of turmeric!

Our best haul yet. Each year dksart@dksart leaves a little more in the ground, resulting in a larger bounty the next. The great thing about turmeric is it seems to need no attention on our part, other than the annual harvest and replanting. Which is nice since the processing of it all can be a beast!

I'm still working on using it up in my cooking (I put it in just about everything--soups, curries, chili, smoothies, oatmeal...) and preserving it for the year ahead. So far I've mostly just chopped and frozen about a third of it, but I am contemplating dehydrating some for tea, as well. If this time of year just wasn't so busy I'd have even more time to play with it! Regardless, I won't let any of it go to waste if I can help it.

For those of you who followed my garden journals this summer, you may get a kick out of knowing our crazy Rampicante staged a comeback after dksart@dksart cut it back and gave us some more baby squash before the frost hit. These plants just won't quit! I will make sure we only plant one or two next year so that it doesn't take over the garden again. It was delicious and versatile, though, so I can't really complain!

We had some late season eggplant, and perhaps some lettuce that has made it through. Otherwise it is time to start planning for the year ahead! Though I should probably go through our seed stash before going crazy on any orders.

I haven't gotten my 2022 Baker Creek Heirloom Seed catalog in the mail yet, but I will cozy up with it and dreams of my spring garden in my head when it arrives. Besides just seeds, I have plans to purchase at least one persimmon tree and perhaps another fig to add to our front yard "orchard." Our young fig tree gave us a few handfuls of fruit this year, but I would love more. When I looked at how to propagate, it seems we may need to wait another year for that one to get established before we try to take any clippings from it. So until then I'll happily pick up one from the market or a friend if I can.

I think we may try to add some new beds out back this year, and I think we may also need to do some testing to possibly amend the soil in the current ones before spring planting. dksart@dksart always does a good job keeping up our compost piles, so we have plenty of the good stuff to add in when the time comes!

I'd love to get a better start on our hard squash this year since we only had a single butternut, no Candy Roasters nor any of the heirloom pumpkins I was hoping for. I would love to carve out some more space for beans, as well! So many plans, so we'll see how much we get to this year. If not, there's always the next, and the next, and the next...

Until then I'll just be jealous of fionasfavourites@fionasfavourites' gorgeous loot she keeps taunting me with from her garden. It's been a bit since I've checked in on what's growing for artemislives@artemislives in her neck of the woods right now, too. Always fun to see what the other points on the globe have in season!

For my dear riverlows@riverlows, the current queen bee of the Garden Journal Challenge, a selfie with my snazzy Christmas pants. The green may be mostly gone outside, but I can bring a little inside with these bad boys. They are definitely getting multiple wears this season. You may just see them again soon for another festive workout...
