We've been awfully quiet on here this week, yet we haven't actually stopped...
Being automotive journalists and YouTubers involve a fair bit of editing, and a computer is essential for this task. Trouble is, they sometimes stop working they way they are supposed to - and then what do you do? Okay, the simple solution is to buy a new one, but what do you do when all you have tried has failed, and you have a shed load of content on there?
Turns out, there is a fair bit you can do, but it's time consuming.
First of all, we tried Plan A - uploading files to our Creative Cloud - in theory it's quick, easy, and can be seen on multiple devices:
What's not so easy is when you finally realise that the hard drive is so poorly, it makes a relatively quick and simple procedure painfully slow, and highly unstable.
Time for Plan B...There is a way for two laptops to share stuff over a wifi network, you just need to know how to set it up:
Now this worked, at first. Unfortunately, as the hard drive continued to deteriorate, this took longer and longer...booo. So what to do now? The content needs to be recovered, so there must be another way...Cue Ben's ingenious brain...yay.
He said it was time for Plan C - remove the hard drive from the laptop and recover the data externally. Cue the SATA cable.
Step One - make sure the cable you want is the one you need.
Step Two - buy said cable, and wait for it to arrive.
Step Three - get back to work, Bob!
One of these can connect a hard drive to another laptop (or desktop for that matter) power it up, and enable you to manually transfer the content onto a new device. It can take some time though...
Cuppa, anyone? 😕😕
Seriously, though, don't underestimate the power of a good cup of tea...
So finally, and with our brand new laptop, things are slowly (and I mean slowly) being recovered...cue collective sigh of relief.
It's been a really slow, and painfully torturous experience though, which has slowed our productivity down immensly, and if you think we're exaggerating, just do a Google search for a failed hard drive...
Thank you all Hiveans. With the support from all of our friends and readers, it enabled us to buy this lovely new machine pretty much straight away, and get back on track in terms of editing and creating content.
This new machine is extremely powerful and fantastically good value - bought from Scan, it's an Asus Tuff Gaming F15 Laptop, and it reduces rendering time down from several hours to just minutes...I'm thinking we should have upgraded many moons ago.
