I never in my life thought that I would be living in Alaska with my boyfriend and his 23 dogs, while building a non profit that has potential to heal the planet. I came from Colorado and I have traveled alone to Latin America since the age of 17. From an exchange student in Argentina to a travel consultant in Peru, I thought for sure I was going to be an expat for the rest of my life.
I just felt better living outside the United States. I felt I was surrounded by culture, language, amazing smells and a way of life that was just happier than the one I saw back home. It wasn't until I left Peru and changed things up a bit. I decided to head North to Alaska. I found a job on CoolWorks.com, I bought my plane ticket and packed up once again. I found myself surround by oceans of lush green forest and a slower way of life that reminded me of the one in Latin America.
During that summer, I was fortunate enough to have met Elijah at a festival. We bumped into each other, and then he took me foraging for blueberries. I thought, "Wow, a tall handsome, rugged man that knows about berries, cool!" We stayed in touch over the phone for the next months, and he eventually convinced me to leave my summer job a couple days early so that we could go adventuring together. I did just that and we have been doing it ever since.
Today we are surrounded by amazing animals and amazing people that just want to help. Even when the days are "hard" around here, it really is the best place that I could ever imagine. It goes against the social norm of getting married, buying a house, having a kid, and allows for my passions and creativity to shine bright.
The picture above is a drawing that one of our volunteers did. It was a birthday present for Elijah.
