Hey Steemians! I try not to do too much sharing of other links here like I would on FB or Twitter, because I don't want to annoy folks, but this was just really amazing to me and if it comes into use, could mean a lot of lives saved.

Basically, these researchers have discovered a way to remove the sugars in blood that makes different types incompatible, essentially making all blood into the universal O-. They used gut bacteria that will use up the sugars to remove them (type O- doesn't have any of the sugars, which is why it is the universal donor type, because it's the sugars that the body reacts to and rejects if they're the wrong kind). So this could mean no blood shortages, because they can turn everyone's donation into one that can be used by everyone else. Imagine how many lives could be saved!
It still has to pass safety testing and I'm sure trials and whatnot, so it's not going to be in use probably any time soon. But it's a great discovery, so I just had to share!
