Health care is still moving to digitized data environments. When your health care data is aggregated, it forms a fairly complete picture of you as an individual. Most Americans believe that HIPAA protects their health care data. It doesn't! It protects the covered entities that use your health care data for purposes that go far beyond your personal health care treatment activities. Not all of these activities are nefarious, but should the health care consumer have a choice?
Currently, these activities are spread across the entire health care system (federal, state and local). Health care data is used without your permission for a rapidly scaling ecosystem of activities - some of which will affect your privacy, confidentiality and ability to get future health care services via covered medical benefits.
Blockchain is going to be vital to health care - because of its ledger-technology that creates an audit trail for where, when and for what purpose your health care data have been used. This is especially important as health care moves to distributed networks.
Individuals own their personal health data. Individuals should provide permission and authorization based on their preferences.
