My first little dog was a 5 week old Fox Terrier that I begged for for weeks after finding out his mother was pregnant till my dad eventually said okay, I'll talk to the gentleman who was our neighbor straight across the street. I remember him well, Mr. Bredenkamp who drove a beautiful humber

the man agreed to let me have the puppy on condition I feed him with a bottle as he was suppose to still be with his mom a week longer.

My dad being very big on animal care drove me into town in his mustard color Hillman Vogue

and we stopped at the chemist where we bought formula and two little baby bottles along with a hot water bottle and blanket for his basket which we picked up at the pet shop.

No we drove back home and went to see Mr. Bredenkamp who passed me my puppy which went to sleep again quite!

quickly after I wrapped him up. His name was Buks which I can't find a reasonable translation for, but that is what it was.

Well bugger me I wish someone had warned me as to how much hard work this was going to be, oh wait, my dad did, a few times. That puppy needed feeding every two hours and cried all the time, but dad was firm that I wanted him and that he was now my responsibility so I was going to care for him well.

Buks grew to be a beautiful and very loyal friend, companion, partner in crime and protector. We swam together, went on adventures in the bush together, went for bicycle rides together, bathed together and eventually shared my bed.

Awesome and fond memories of such a great friend warms the heart long after the photos went missing.
