Sasso Spicco, La verna Sanctuary, 06/09/2019

Religious graffiti sometimes is regarded as belief in ups and downs. But it's not all. It should be considered as the expression of innocent hope if not to much.

정화수의 기도/Prayer with purified water

There is an archetype of belief in the ups and downs of Korean folk customs. Our mothers got up early in the morning, prepared a bowl of clear water from a well filled with the energy of dawn, and prayed for the blessings of their family. I can understand the hearts of people who carved a cross on a stone wall.

This place, called Sasso Spicco, is where Francis prayed and meditated on the Passion of Christ. The fissures in the rock represent the wounds on the side of Jesus Christ (where he was pierced with a grate to confirm his death).

The scenery around the cave is beautiful. There are many traces of the cross carved on the surface of the rock. There was a warning sign not to graffiti before entering. It was probably carved by pilgrims who visited after saint Francis's death. There may be some that had been engraved for as long as 800 years or as short as recently.
