Making friends with people at the market is not as good as making friends with an old man in deep mountains. Flattering those in power isn't as good as being friends with the poor. Hearing rumors floating around in the streets is not as good as hearing the song of a woodcutter or a shepherd. Talking out the faults of a living person is not as good as talking about the proverbs and beautiful deeds of old people. (Book1 157)

Pretense is what you should not do in pursuit of wealth and fame.
