“And patiently keep yourself with those who call upon their Lord morning and evening, seeking His pleasure. And do not let your eyes pass beyond them, desiring the adornments of this worldly life. And do not obey one whose heart We have made heedless of Our remembrance, who follows his own desires, and whose affairs have become excessive and neglected.”
[Surah Al-Kahf, 18:28]
What a profound verse—one that lays out a sound and powerful way of life.
It begins by showing you the kind of community you should strive to surround yourself with:
“And patiently keep yourself with those who call upon their Lord morning and evening.”
Seek an environment in which Allah is remembered, and surround yourself with people whose lives help you remain conscious of Him.
But do not be satisfied merely with an outward appearance of righteousness. Look, as far as you are able to judge from people’s conduct, for signs of sincerity—that their righteousness is not merely for show, praise, or reputation:
“Seeking His pleasure.”
This is the kind of environment worth striving for: a community among whose people you live and grow, and among whom you would want to raise your children.
Life also inevitably brings moments when we need the advice of others, or when we look for successful people whose example we might follow. Here, the verse gives us criteria by which to evaluate those we allow to influence and guide us:
“And do not obey one whose heart We have made heedless of Our remembrance, who follows his own desires, and whose affairs have become excessive and neglected.”
So beware of:
The one who is heedless of the remembrance of Allah.
The one who is led by his own desires.
The one whose affairs are in disarray and neglect—wasting his life, scattering his time, and living without proper care for what truly matters.
Yet none of this is necessarily easy or naturally appealing to the human soul. The soul is prone to being attracted to amusement, distraction, beauty, and worldly adornment. Living by these principles therefore requires effort, self-discipline, and patience.
Perhaps that is why the verse begins with:
“And patiently keep yourself…”
You must sometimes hold yourself firmly to the company, environment, and path that are good for you, even when your desires pull you elsewhere.
Then comes another powerful reinforcement of the same principle:
“And do not let your eyes pass beyond them, desiring the adornments of this worldly life.”
Do not give your eyes free rein to turn away from such people in pursuit of another crowd simply because they possess more wealth, fame, status, glamour, or worldly appeal.
What catches the eye can eventually capture the heart.
It is as though this verse builds three protective walls around your life:
Choose your environment on the basis of faith and sincerity of purpose.
Choose those you seek advice from and take as examples on the basis of remembrance of Allah, mastery over desire, and soundness of conduct.
And never allow the glitter of this world to corrupt either of those choices.
Your environment shapes you.
Your role models direct you.
And your eyes may tempt you away from both.
So choose carefully where you live, whom you live among, whom you learn from, and what you allow your eyes to dwell upon—because choices that seem small today may ultimately determine the direction of your entire life.
