Mr. Hitler is know for many things, however one of the most interesting facts about Hitler's life is also one that isn't all that well known. That is, as the title suggests, that Hitler was a rampant drug addict. He wasn't the stereotypical type of drug addict that you would probably imagine shivering over a needle and spoon in the bathroom before his big speeches. No, infact he was recieving these drugs from a doctor. His name was Theodor Morell and he was able to gain favor with Hitler by curing his terrible stomach ailments which no other doctor was able to do up until this point. Morell was not well liked or approved by other doctors in germany because of his unconventional treatments, however Hitler placed his full trust in him and kept him by his side at all times. Morell would 'cure' Hitler of any problems he encountered throughout his day to day life. By 'cure' I mean temporarily cover them up with extremely potent drugs. For example Mr. Hitler starting recieving daily injections of Methamphetamine for energy, which would have produced effects similar if not identical to crystal Methamphetamine that exists today. Hitler was obsessed with the image of power and never showing signs of weakness, this is partly why he felt the need to prop himself up with stimulants, giving his audience a sense of confidence and strength. The list of drugs that Hitler took is truely extensive and contains over 74 different medications including steroids and some substances that are still unknown to this day. By the end of the war, Hitler was starting to fall arpart both mentally and physically. There is a famous video showing him personally send off several young boys to defend what was left of Berlin in the final moments before Germany's collapse. At the same time, he was hiding his trembling hand behind his back which he had lost all control of. At this point he was completely dillusional, still believing Germany would win the war, right up until the very end. All of this begs the question, did Hitler's drug use affect the decisions he made throughout world war two? Considering the psychological effects that both Methamphetamine and steroid use are known to cause, there is no doubt in my mind that many of the decisions that Hitler made were the result of drug induced psychosis. If you have any opinions or information about this, leave a comment and let me know what you think. I hope you learned something interesting or new today, thanks for reading.
