With respect to the just concluded world sickle cell day which held on the 19th of June, I decided to play my own part in creating awareness of this disease. I did a post earlier to enlighten my fellow steemians, this post can be found Here. Today, I joined my fellow Rotract club members to do a street rally on sickle cell sensitization.
It was a successful event, as people came out to help in the sensitization.
We did talk to a lot of people, enlightening them on sickle cell anemia and sickle cell trait. Knowing your genotype is very important. I was suprised today that most individuals we met didn't even know what genotype was, talk less of knowing their genotype. I was happy to be there and enlighten the masses.
There are lots of people who suffer from sickle cell and lots of people are unaware of this. We were there to create awareness and also support those with sickle cell. I believe our little project would go a long way in helping the sicklers and also preventing to some extent further occurrence of the disease.
To help curb this disease, know your genotype and that of your intending partner before marriage.
