So, Shadow of the bird for this week's Show Me A Photo contest! melinda010100@melinda010100, I imagine you're having a blast with this week's theme, right? 😁😉

I was unsure if I was going to find any photo to enter this week, but fortunately I've found them, thanks to the sandgrouses!

Pin-tailed sandgrouse / Ganga (PT) - Pterocles alchata, male

I've never seen a sandgrouse in the wild, although they do exist in Portugal. These photos were taken years ago in a breeding facility for birds, in Spain. They had a big outdoor space with a pond, where a lot of species co-existed, and these little guys were roaming around!

Small birds... small shadows! In the wild, sandgrouses are gregarious, meaning they live in group, and are more characteristic of arid and desertic areas; their colours allow them to blend in with the environment.

Among the species near that small pond, found another shadow with a bird attached:

Common tern / Garajau comum (PT) - Sterna hirundo

These ones are far more common; it's a fisher species, so you will find her near water.

Speaking of species that fish... guess what was trying to sneak past my camera??

Cattle egret / Carraceiro (PT) - Bubulcus ibis

This cattle egret was going full ninja mode, trying to go unnoticed. And she had a shadow with her too! 😁

Their beak is normally more yellow, the orange tones tell that she's in breeding season.

And that's it, no more decent shadows in my archives! I do have more birds thow... just waiting to know what will the next theme be!
