Let's see, how do I start this edition of Autismo Mundo Azul, because we are celebrating Holos Lotus' second anniversary and I want to present a topic related to language in autism and the stimulus it should receive for a successful communication, and the topic of words has been discussed for several weeks in the community. Well, maybe the first thing I should do is to say hello, it is the most logical thing to do while I organize my ideas a little bit in order to be able to talk to you a little bit about a particularity in the way people with autism communicate. It is not so easy for me to use all the specialized terms but as other times I will only think about my experience and knowledge as a blue mother, I will write, read myself and organize my text in a way that there is coherence and simplicity at the same time.
I remember as if it were today when I was explained for the first time in my life about the characteristics of autism, that was 23 years ago in SOVENIA, Caracas, Venezuela, institute where my first and only son was diagnosed with mild autism at that time. From then on I undertook my search for knowledge about the condition to understand it and to be able to give the attention my son needed, especially because there are many characteristics but not all are met in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and among them, I just want to highlight one that has to do with language and communication, which is where autism has greater particularities presenting difficulties for proper interaction.
Speaking in the third person
It turns out that it is normal for young children up to a certain age to speak in the third person, which is a form of expression where the child speaks as if he is referring to someone else and not to him. For example, to ask for water, instead of saying, "I want water", the child says, "he wants" water, another example is when the child says, "he is hot" instead of "I am" hot or says "he is angry" instead of "I am" angry. I am sure that those who read me identify with this particularity in children up to two or maybe even three years of age, which is fine, because beyond that age it is important to show concern by manifesting to the pediatrician, as a first professional option, this peculiar way of communicating the child because it may or may not be a sign of Autism.
What to do?
Apart from the assistance that children can receive from specialists for language stimulation, I recommend what was explained to me, and that is that the first thing is not to be alarmed because there are effective ways to modify this particularity of speaking in the third person and the game is one of them, especially those where imitation is the goal, because in this way we stimulate the child to copy the correct forms of certain expressions.
Of course, in the case of mild autism it is easier to obtain positive responses to stimuli to make communication more successful, I say this because in cases of moderate and especially severe autism, is where there is greater neurological involvement. The task requires more time because it is necessary to use many strategies and patience, without forgetting faith mixed with love, the essential ingredients to see results according to each case. I know that for some this may sound subjective, because we know that autism is a neurological disorder that presents itself in levels, that is to say that the responses to stimuli will not be the same, but I also remind you that the worst attempt is the one that is not made and that a diagnosis of autism does not represent an end but the beginning of whatever we want it to be. There is always something to do to encourage communication in people with ASD and we may see that kid say a few sentences in the first person.
IMPORTANT: The diagnosis of ASD should be made by specialists.
