Celery is a fascinating vegetable. It can really talk to you, although much of the time, it only says 'I NEED A DRINK!' Celery grows very easily in pots indoors, but it's super thirsty. The cool thing about it is that it will show its appreciation pretty quickly, once you give it what it wants.
The celery below was begging for a drink when I got home from work, so I gave it one.
After five minutes, there isn't much to see, but there was definitely some movement.
After ten minutes, you can definitely tell you got its attention.
After fifteen minutes, you can barely tell it was ever unhappy.
Twenty minutes later, you can practically hear it smacking its lips.
Approaching twenty five minutes later, it's slowing down, but still noticeably coming to life.
After a half hour, it's basically back to normal. Some of the bent stalks will continue to straighten out.
After a full hour, pretty much every stalk has lifted itself off the rim of the pot.
Nothing to learn here really, this just fascinates me, so I thought I'd share. The potted chives behind the celery to the right exhibit similar behavior on a slower time frame. The dainty round leaves at the bottom of the pictures are marjoram, which will have none of this game. When marjoram gets thirsty, it keeps that thirst to itself until it dies.
I hope you enjoyed my indulgent sick day fluff post.
