Yes, we know new goose babies such as the one above, but I also bring you an exciting new different set of babies!

I have posted the Egyptian goose babies recently and today I wonder if you can identify the baby in the second picture before having a look at the rest of the post?
Come to have a look at this late afternoon shoot at a local dam!

Do you know what this one below is?

Doesn't look at all like a goose baby, or maybe I am mistaken?
Where are the bird experts here in #featheredfriends ?

Ah! So they are "Red-knobbed-coot" babies (Fulica cristata)

There were four of them, but I could only get three together!

Here above is the dad, that came to have a look if I am a danger to his children!

But, there was also another bird that wanted his picture taken!
This one above is called a "Moorhen (Gallinula chloropus)

A bit windy and you can see their feathers all over the show!

Dad at the back, mom and the Moorhen at the front!

Finally, here above you can see most of them together.

We paid a visit to a local dam here in the Western Cape Province and these are all wild birds.
Interestingly all of these babies are born with fur (down), because they are water birds and will have to swim soon after birth.
Other small birds such as the sunbirds are born naked as they are not water birds.

Most birds have one thing in common. Although their feathers are designed to interlock and the feathers perform different functions, they can also oil their feathers.
They have a gland situated above the base of their tails and the reach back with their beaks to scoop the oil out and stroke it onto their feathers with their beaks.

It is called the "Uropygial Gland" and you can find more information here:

And That's All Friends!
