A happy Friday to all and today we will show you the famous Blackwing Lapwing/Plover in flight!

We had an appointment to see a doctor at a large hospital and on our way out I took a quick walk near a large dry dam.
Immediately two Blackwings rose up into the sky and started circling me. They mush have a nest in the tall grasses in the bed of the dam. I knew that if I approached the nest they would dive bomb me, so I backed off!

The sun was a problem and I tried to keep it's glare behind me and the camera.

But how did I know that they were Blacksmiths?
Well their call when alarmed sounds like a hammer striking metal. That's how they got the name.

A goose with two heads???
Now how is this above for synchronised flying?
A pair of Egyptian geese came over!

Giving me a good lookover here to see where he would strike me on my head if I got closer to the nest 馃ぃ

Here above he circled into the suns glare that colored his wing so lovely!

And finally the sun lighted his body as he came over!

Of course the moon as usual kept an eye on her Blackwings!

Here's more information on the Blackwings:

"Blacksmith lapwings are very boldly patterned in black, grey and white, possibly warning colours to predators. It is one of five lapwing species (two African, one Asian and two Neotropical) that share the characteristics of red eyes and a bold pied plumage, with a carpal (wing) spur adorning the wrist joint; a sharp black protrusion which they use to aggressively defend their young from potential threats, through persistent aerial dives typically targeting the head".

"The portions of the bird's body bare to plumage average a black coloration for the bill, and either a black or white-grey dappling on the legs. Females average larger and heavier but the sexes are generally alike".

I have some photos of their babies in my files and when I find it I will post them.
These are brave little birds and we remember well how they dive bombed our truck during our work on the high voltage electrical towers in the veld.

And That's All Friends.

We hope that you enjoy your Friday and this weekend please do something that will make you feel good!
