Let's keep a good heart and mind. Teaching is not easy at all. You need to keep correcting over and over again until perfection is attained.
I can't even fathom what a bad teacher can do to a kid. However, what a student can do to a teacher is still predictable, because we have been in such positions beforehand..
One thing I have learnt from the school premises is that, as individuals, we have our own strengths and weaknesses. I have also learnt that joint effort in correcting and guiding a child really works.
Today, I must say that I was flabbergasted when I was struggling with a class and more than five teachers came to caution the same class. I didn't voice out my feelings, but they saw my reaction and stepped in to do justice to the situation.
It was after I had finished the class that one of the teachers came to me requesting that I should always tell other teachers if a student misbehaves and together they will clear the air. The attitude of some of these students is like a chain reaction, causing one to burn another. If one student sees the weakness of one teacher, they feed on that teacher's weakness. These students forget that teachers are not there to destroy them but to correct them. Some even make jest of these teachers. I can recollect when one of my colleagues, a male teacher, said bitterly to one of the students who had nothing to offer than to mock the teacher, that he once used to be like her. She was punished and even decided to take the punishment to the next level by doing more than normal.
The teacher pitied her and was burning in pain, saying how he wished she could obey — she wouldn't have done so much. He gave her another chance, but she insisted that she would not take that part other than the punishment. She also chose to reply to the teacher's every word rather than to reflect on her wrongdoings. After seeing two additional teachers talk to her, she became calm and corrected her wrongdoings.
We teachers are not bad because we correct you students. We also do good.
There was a boy that I saw every day at the bus stop confused and sad. One Monday, I chose to give him a ride to school. In fact from that period till this day, I will give him a ride.
Today, I didn't even know that a child I had been helping was related to my neighbour.
Every morning, I see a boy going towards my school, and I would wonder why he was always waiting for someone he called "Big Mummy." I would tell him to hop in, and I would give him a ride to school. All I saw was his school uniform. He recognized me, but I didn't immediately recognize him.
I only saw someone who needed help, and I offered it. I didn't know that he was closer to me than I thought. He said that I knew his big mummy. I thought 🤔, "Big mummy... I don't know your big mummy," I said. He replied, "Big mummy said that she knows me."
Today, my neighbour narrated that he was often asked to pick up litter as punishment for coming late; however, what they didn't know was that he was waiting for her, as she does her things late. She said he was about to be scolded for going to school via a stranger, not until he mentioned my name and she remembered that I also worked at the school.
This gentleman goes to school earlier than usual since then.
However, within those split seconds of the first day I saw him, a few thoughts ran through my mind: Should I help? I hope it won't be unethical.
But deep down, another voice told me, "Just help."
We all have our roles to play in any organization we find ourselves in.
Truly, to nurture minds, we need to be strong ourselves. It is no small feat. It is no small battle.
We truly cannot tell where or through whom our good deeds will return to us. I believe in the saying that you never can tell if it is the good you have done that has kept you until this day.
Though I am not a fan of public appraisal, I try to reflect on my day at night and write about it once in a while.
