During the orientation of the new students in Muna’s school I sat beside a parent from her previous school and we listened attentively as all teachers introduced themselves and also they get to educate us on all the school activities and their achievements.
They also allowed a question and answer section for parents and students . One of the questions a student asked was if they can bring money to school to buy snacks from the school canteen. This brought lot of arguments as some parents were in support and others were not. The woman beside me turned to me to voice her own opinion . She said that she find nothing wrong with giving her child money sometimes to buy snacks from the school canteen.
“ They are in year 7 now” she added.
The school disclosed that they allow students in secondary school to come to school with money to buy their snacks but that privilege is for them only thus pupils in primary school must bring their snacks from school.
A week after resumption Muna begged me to give her money to buy snacks in school. She said she want to experience buying snacks in their school canteen. I obliged her for that day only and gave her 500 naira even after packing her snacks inside her bag. I didn’t follow up on how she spent the money but I noticed that she bought cheese ball for her sister Zizi.
it’s been two weeks since that day and today Muna walked inside my room when she came back from
School to gist me about her day. I wasn’t paying full attention to her but was forced to when she mentioned that someone refused to pay back the money she borrowed him.
“ He asked me to give him 200 naira that he will give me back “ she explained.
“ And you gave him? As a rich girl or what ?” I asked her.
“ Mummy he begged that he really needed the money. So I gave it to him. He promised to pay me back “
“ So have he given you back your money ?” I enquired.
“ Mummy i have been asking him of my money but he is always telling me no. I have been scammed !”
I shook my head in disbelieve. How can a small boy already be so cunny and fraudulent.
“ Mummy can you imagine that he even have the audacity to ask me today if I have some money with me “.
I have to warn Muna to stay away from this particular person. It’s not a good thing to go about collecting money from your classmates.
I am thinking of reporting this to the school immediately. Better to act now to save many innocent children and the school that is already planting - CHEATING!
