Hola querido hiver.

Hi dear hiver.
Do you need to have an opinion on everything that happens around you, or that you hear about? I used to think so. Since I have immersed myself daily in Stoic reflections I have discovered the advantages of abandoning my own firmly held opinions and I experience a calm that I wouldn't trade for anything.
When the Stoics speak of opinions, they are referring to dogmas. They are those ideas ingrained in our minds that we defend fiercely and almost instinctively. They make up our value and belief systems that guide our actions. And that we expect to guide the actions of others.
When you stop trying to put the world through the sieve you made, you free yourself from most of your suffering. That's what I've experienced, at least. I no longer fight for others to think like me. Do I need to? No. Does it make me happier or more miserable? Neither. It all depends on how I interpret it and that is the power that lies within us and that no one can take away from us, unless you lose your mental health.
Things are as they are, without labels. It is our eagerness to classify what surrounds us that adds an emotional patina to events. And emotions bring suffering, whether by action or omission. Perennial happiness does not exist and losses come.
In recent years I have avoided conflicts, especially those that arise from trying to convince others to see the world as I do. It seemed like common sense to me. But is it really so common what I think? Oh, my friend, here was the crux of the matter. The world is so immense and I knew such a tiny corner of it... Thanks to the passage of time and the accumulation of experiences, my eyes have been opened. Also my efforts to improve, none of this has come on its own.
Letting go of my opinions has been easier than I first imagined. When I feel the inner fire that signals an emotion coming on, I stop. Taking a distance is essential to keep a cool head. A few seconds are enough to realise this whole process and to remember that I can control myself. Do I always succeed? No, of course I don't. It's too many years of deepening my mental patterns. But I don't give up, that's the main thing. Every time I fail is one less mistake to reach my goal.
See you next time. In the meantime, take care!
