Hola querido hiver.
Novelas a plazos.

Hi, dear hiver.
Yesterday afternoon I had to do some business in the city centre. My intention was to take advantage of the trip to go into a well-known shopping centre near my destination and do some shopping if I could find something to my liking.
However, when the bus passed by the so-called Plaza Aragón, I saw that the stands were set up for the Old and Antique Book Fair, which is held every year and this year celebrates its 18th birthday.
Of course, my initial goal could not be changed, but the secondary one could. Farewell to the shopping centre and welcome to that stroll from stall to stall browsing through copies of all times and places.
In Spain we call librerías de viejo (old bookshops) the places where used books and remaindered editions are sold. Hidden among the dust and the smell of aged paper you can find real gems.
Although I am not a treasure hunter, nor do I collect books, I have enjoyed visiting these places where there are fewer and fewer customers and more and more merchandise on the shelves. Since I was a child I got used to reading books from the public library, so I never minded buying them used, and that allowed me to buy more books with the same money, which was never surplus or left over.
It seems almost a miracle to me that books like the ones you see above are still waiting for someone to open them one more time. Just by looking at their spines you know that they are works of art in themselves.
Digital wins the battle in terms of practicality and price, yes, but it can never replace the beauty of printed images, the sound of turning pages and the feel and smell of them. Romantic that is the one who writes to you.
In addition to books proper, on any subject that might occur to you, there are other reading formats or those that have paper as a common element.
Thus we find comics, which in Spain we call tebeos by assimilation of TBO, the most popular comic at the time. It should be noted that they were considered as an object aimed exclusively at children, so in the case of comics for older ages they were called novelas gráficas para adultos (graphic novels for adults).
In post-war times the economy did not allow the luxury of buying novels. A cheap solution was to fragment them and sell them in parts that came out every week. Novels in instalments.
I was struck by a box full of botanical lithographs, all different but equally beautiful. And also expensive. At 15 € a piece, DIN A-4 size.
You can console yourself with some curious full-colour film programmes or old postcards of means of transport. The point is to collect something that doesn't do much good, but is still very curious. But it won't be cheap either.
As you know that if I can I like to incorporate some humour, this time I bring you a couple of gems. The first one, the name of one of the participating bookshops: Asylum of the book. I can't think of anything more descriptive, really.
On the other hand, seeing the ufology and chess sections sharing a shelf and without any distance from each other almost made me short-circuit my brain. Would aliens play chess? Would chess players be Martians in camouflage? Thousands of questions assailed me and I still can't find an answer. I haven't looked for it either until now, hehe. Who knows.
The fact is that I ended up not buying anything, although I was certainly tempted by a biography of Santiago Ramón y Cajal. I have a small pile of physical books waiting for their moment of glory and in digital format I'm a textbook Diogenes. I don't even know which ones I can keep for when I feel like it. The funny thing is that despite not reading books, this is the time of my life when I read the most. Here, in Hive, of course.
Until the next post. In the meantime, take care!
