Hello, my friends. What a pleasure to greet you again.
I still have the smell of new paper stuck in my nose. You already know how this Havana Book Fair thing goes—if you're a lover of literature, you leave there with your bags full, your wallet empty, your feet sore from walking, but with a smile from ear to ear. This year, the Fair wasn't held at La Cabaña, as usual, but at the Cultural Station on Línea Street.
I began my tour through the areas and shelves of adult books and saw some presentations. However, this year something different happened to me. I escaped from the big publishing houses and went into the children's pavilion, almost by chance. And let me tell you, it was like entering another world.
The first thing that hits you is the color. Forget the gray of the sidewalks or the suffocating heat of August. In there, everything was an explosion of joy. They had hung pennants of every imaginable color, and the walls were covered with giant drawings of dragons, astronauts, and talking animals. The children ran from one side to the other, some dressed as their favorite characters, and the noise was deafening, but a beautiful kind of noise, the kind that reminds you that reading isn't a silent and boring act, but a party.
I sat down, along with other spectators, on some plastic chairs like the ones that look like toys. In front of me, a giant screen and an improvised stage with tables, the presentation of several books, both virtual and physical, was about to begin. The anticipation in the air was palpable, the parents tried to quiet the kids, and the kids, honestly, were right to be excited.
The first presentation was for a book of stories about Cuban animals. The author, an older lady with a soft voice, began to read the story of a crab that wanted to be a dancer. The children were hypnotized. Seeing their faces of amazement while the crab did pirouettes in the sand was better than any suspense novel for adults. Then came a book of poetry for children, and that was madness. The poet asked for volunteers and, suddenly, the stage was filled with little ones reciting verses about rain and the sea. They made mistakes, they laughed, and the audience applauded as if they were at a rock concert.
The best came afterward. They presented a collection of illustrated books about science fiction for kids. Yes, you read that right: science fiction for children. The authors explained how they imagined spaceships made from soda cans and robots that collected trash in the Havana of the future. It was fascinating to see how imagination has no limits or ages. A boy raised his hand and asked if the robots could be his friends. The author laughed and told him yes, that's what reading is about, making invisible friends who live in the pages.
In the end, I stayed a while longer, browsing some copies. There was even a conga where many were encouraged to dance, myself among them, of course. I bought a couple of books, of course, I couldn't resist. As I left that pavilion, with the noise of the children still in my ears, I thought about how important this space is. In the midst of so much gray news and daily problems, that place was a bubble of pure happiness. The Havana Book Fair has many things, but the heart, without a doubt, beats strong and colorful in its children's pavilion. If you have the opportunity, don't miss it. Go, even if it's just to remember that, sometimes, the best literature is the kind that makes you feel like a child again.
