That's where the famous phrase fits perfectly: "ah well, guess you gotta drink." Because I always wonder how some creators manage to do everything from their phone, and today I'm in that exact situation. I've had no internet for two days, and luckily my provider loaded 10 GB onto my phone to get me through these two days without internet. Apparently they're coming today to fix the issue. As a content creator, you kind of think you're pretty independent. I've got my phone, my computer, my editing programs, and everything that comes with wanting to make content. Honestly I have almost everything, because there's always something missing. The thing is, without internet, you can barely do anything. It reminded me of the early days of the internet, back in the 90s. Not even my editing program works 100% offline. And you can do a lot from your phone, but it eats up your data really fast.
I started thinking: what would happen if the internet went down for several days, weeks, or maybe even months? I figure the first few days would be brutal, and we'd end up walking around like zombies. But I think that after those terrible first hours, we'd find things to do that we'd been putting off — like what happened to me yesterday, when I finally tackled stuff around the house I'd been postponing for ages, and even the pain in my hand and arms I've been having lately just went away.
I think the internet gives us the freedom to work from wherever we want, but it also keeps us trapped and at its disposal. In other words, decentralization seems like a utopia. I don't think you can ever really step outside the system while also living within it at the same time. I know that for most people who might read this post, not having internet or electricity is almost part of their everyday reality. But here in Argentina, and in the area where I am, the services work reasonably well — and that's exactly why these questions and doubts come up for me.
Luckily I got to go train yesterday, and while I was chatting with my friend Wash, he told me: "Luckily I have a trade." And I asked myself if what I do is also a trade. Being a content creator, I think it is too — it's just that we depend on virtual tools. My friend said it to me with a tone like things used to be better, because stuff like this didn't happen back then. In some way I think he's right, because today everything's made to last a few months, and back in the day things were made to last a lifetime... I think. But unfortunately, that's the reality today, and we have to learn to surf it to come out unscathed.
That's my reflection for the day, and hopefully the internet comes back soon, because it's hard for me to be alone with myself in silence.
Happy day to you, whoever read this all the way to the end 🫂.
