Los registros dicen que nació en Gelsenkirchen, en la antigua Germania, para fines prácticos, aquellos que conocemos su magia, sabemos que viene de la tierra mágica de Oz. Mesut es un futbolista a contramano del tiempo, de esos que el mal logrado fútbol moderno ha puesto en peligro de extinción; Özil era un centrocampista mágico e imaginativo como pocos. Su fútbol nos dejaba ciertos trazos de asociables a Zinedine Zidane, en su forma de controlar la pelota y de moverse gracilmente por el terreno de juego el germano de ascendencia turca se asemejaba en cierta forma al francés de orígenes argelinos.
De niño era amante del ping pong y era buenísimo en ello, quizá eso explique esa capacidad exquisita para golpear la pelota de una manera tan especial para imprimirle una jiribilla única e inigualable. Özil era de esos futbolistas capaces de ver una asistencia en entornos inimaginables, simplemente un genio de descomunales proporciones. No por nada es el único jugador en la historia en ser líder de asistencias en temporadas de Bundesliga, LaLiga, Premier League, Champions League, Europa League, una Copa del Mundo y una Eurocopa. De esos futbolistas tan mágicamente buenos que hace mejor a aquellos a quienes tiene al lado.

Cuatro temporadas fueron las que jugó para el Real Madrid y en 3 de ellas coincidió con Cristiano Ronaldo para convertirse en uno de sus mejores socios, creando 31 asistencias de gol tan solo para el astro lusitano. Özil era un hechicero de la pelota, tenía la dosis de magia justa para hacer que la pelota pudiera circular por sitios insospechados, inventaba casi de forma rutinaria pases que eran imposibles para el grueso de jugador. Özil es de esos pocos jugadores de la posmodernidad futbolística que sí hacen valer el adagio que reza: “la pelota siempre al 10”.
Özil se fue del Real Madrid por culpa de su padre -en aquel entonces su agente- pues quiso negociar avariciosa y ventajosamente con un Florentino Pérez que no se inmuta ante amenaza alguna de cualquier agente o jugador. Una partida de la Casa Blanca que fue dolorosa, como doloroso fue su adiós a la Mannschaft diciendo: “Soy alemán cuando ganamos, un inmigrante cuando perdemos”. Özil se cansó del racismo que sufría de cierto sector de la afición alemana cuando la cosa dejó de ir bien tras haber conquistado el Mundial de 2014, tras el batacazo de Rusia 2018 decidió colgar los botines.

El Mago de Oz exudaba calidad por cada uno de sus poros, cómo olvidar aquella vez en que bajó un pelotazo de 50 metros con la espuela para dejar viendo visiones a quienes le marcaban.
Inolvidable como futbolista, y también como persona por su clase, educación y firmes convicciones. Un buen día, aficionados del Atlético de Madrid le aventaron un trozo de pan, él lo bendijo y le pego un buen mordisco para hacer gala de su clase y mandar el poderoso y firme mensaje de que “la comida es sagrada”. Algún otro día en medio del calentamiento se acercó a un niño ciego que estaba en la tribuna, conversó un buen rato con él y además se dejó tocar para que el nene “generase una imagen” de su ídolo en la única forma que podía. Financió mil cirugías para niños de escasos recursos; en fin, no solo era una mago del balón, trasladaba sus actos al terreno del impacto social positivo. Era un fantástico deportista, un genio del balón, pero es un ser humano como pocos hay en el mundo.

Hoy, el Mago de Oz, ha guardado ya su varita, colgará los botines con 114 goles marcados y 222 asistencias, un genio al que siempre se le miró un poco por encima del hombro, un centrocampista total que, a gusto de un servidor, siempre estuvo infravalorado por la opinión pública; por establecer un termostato de lo anteriormente dicho, Özil dio 10 asistencias más que Xavi Hernandez y 60 más que Andrés Iniesta con un aproximado de 200 partidos menos que cada uno de los tan aclamados medio centros del FC Barcelona; en tres temporadas en LaLiga hizo más asistencia que los Xivi e Iniesta juntos. Mesut lo podía todo, lo demostraba con creces pero no tenía el ruido mediático justo.
Con 34 años, mucha magia en los botines, goles y asistencias fulgurantes en sus registros y un corazón que no le cabe en el pecho, ha dicho adiós al fútbol uno de los grandes genios del centro del campo. Todo lo bien que pueda hablarse de Mesut Özil queda corto para hacer honor a la leyenda del Gran Mago de Oz.
