A place where you will find ingredients and food from all over the world. Taste the authentic flavors of the Netherlands or try something else, maybe from the Middle East, the Balkans or Latin America...

The change in Dutch law prohibiting the sale of meat and fish outdoors was determining factor for the local government of Rotterdam to open a Markthal in 2014. It is the largest covered market in Europe located in the heart of the large Laurens Quarter square, Laurenskwartier district.

There is a permanent exhibition, known as “De Trijdtrap”, it displays the remains found under the foundations, which date back to the 10th century. The exhibition is located on the escalator inside the market and beside ancient settlements, it also shows the history of the city and the food sold at the different stalls.

When entering the market you`ll see an enormous mural, the work of the artists Arno Coene and Iris Roskam. It shows traditional products that can be bought in the market and includes typical images of dutch still lifes.

The work is called “Cornucopia” or “The Horn of Plenty”.
