Last night we had a gig at Glam on the bund with the gypsy jazz guys.
It’s a beautiful bar overlooking the river, peppered with art and designer products. It was my first time here. I’m not sure if live music is a regular thing at Glam. I saw on their promo they have an 'open piano' night....
We were playing for some kind of occasion, but I didn’t catch what it was.... I thought it was meant to be a Qipao party (traditional Chinese dress), but it turned out only the waitresses and female band members were wearing them!
We set up around the grand piano. Having no stage has always been a bit of an annoyance of mine. Especially when it’s packed and lot’s of drunk people…. I guess like having a bit of personal space.
There were also some designer products on display behind the piano so we had people pretty much engulfing us during the performance. The sound setup wasn’t really ideal for this kind of situation. You really need to get quite a lot of volume to compete with a large drunken crowd. And with acoustic instruments it’s quite difficult as they're easy to peak and feedback.
There was also a pro photographer floating around (hence the better than usual pics!). I also set my little camera up in a couple of different places for different sets. One I thought was interesting. I put it on a lamp post, and it gives a pretty good vibe about what the event was like. I really like the changing lights on the buildings of the bund in the backdrop. Pretty cool!
Anyway, despite the problems with sound it was a fun night! The vegan food was fantastic also! It is interesting to see the type of people that go to these kinds of places. They must be on some serious salaries! I thought I got well dressed up, but some of these guys are on another level.
