Attempting a full five days of writing to ensure that these idle hands do not become the devil's playthings. I used the eeny, meeny, miny, moe methodology to select my next book in the library and landed on My Heart is a Chainsaw. So here we go.
Wow, slog of a read, if I'm being honest. Reading this was like counting down the time it takes to do a particularly long plank, or possibly even complete a strenuous sparring session. You feel relieved once it's all over. A native American girl from a broken home finds comfort in the horror genre, having become something of an expert on the subject, and she seems to see enough tell-tale signs to know that her sleepy little town will be the site for some good ol' serial killing.
That's right folks, we've got ourself a sort of horror meta fiction on our hands in which our main character sees herself as an outsider looking in on the unfolding events of horror, following the rules and acting as a sort of slasher Jiminy Cricket to the one she deems as the final girl, the unsuspecting heroine who will take on the killer once she reaches her breaking point. I think it sounds better than what it is. The book waffles on and feels more like a prolonged episode of Scooby Doo, without the quirky music. I'll give it credit for fleshing some of the interesting dimensions of the slasher film, but that's about where my interest in this book ends. Meh.
