Chapter 1: The Gathering Storm

The house felt too quiet. A heavy, unsettling silence had settled in the air, thickening with every passing second. Zuru stood by the window, staring out into the overcast sky, her fingers curled tightly around the edge of the curtain. It was supposed to be an ordinary afternoon, the kind that seemed to stretch endlessly when you were a child. But today, something was different. The world felt out of sync.

The faint scent of incense wafted through the air, reminding Zuru of her father’s ritualistic practices — his prayers, his meditations, the moments of stillness where he connected with something greater than himself. But today, the scent was bitter, almost suffocating. It didn’t smell like peace. It smelled like impending chaos.

She turned, her heart skipping as her eyes scanned the living room. There was no sound, no laughter, no chatter. Normally, her father’s presence filled the room with warmth, his booming voice always ready with words of wisdom or a joke to lighten the mood. But now, he sat in the corner of the room, unnervingly still.

Zuru's footsteps were silent as she approached him, her pulse quickening with each step. She had known something was wrong the moment she had walked through the door, but seeing her father like this made her stomach churn. His head was bowed low, his hands clasped together in front of him — but it wasn’t the serene posture she was used to. His eyes, when she looked closer, were glazed over, as if they weren’t even seeing her. They were hollow, a shadow of the man who had always been a pillar of strength in their family.

"Father?" she called softly, but he didn’t respond.

Instead, his neck twitched slightly, and in that instant, Zuru saw it — a mark. It wasn’t there before. The small, dark symbol had materialized on the back of his neck, just beneath the hairline. The mark seemed to pulse faintly, a cruel, unnatural rhythm that made Zuru’s skin crawl. It looked like an ancient rune — one she had never seen before, but one that spoke of power, and of possession.

She took a step back, heart hammering in her chest. What was happening to him?

Her thoughts raced, panic starting to claw its way up her throat. She glanced around the room, looking for anyone else — her brothers, her mother, anyone. But the house seemed to hold its breath, like a predator waiting in the dark. Then, a low groan escaped her father’s throat, followed by a guttural growl. His body jerked, spasming violently, and in that moment, Zuru understood. The spirit had claimed him.

The mark on her father’s neck began to glow, a sickly yellow light that seemed to seep into the very air around him. Zuru's blood ran cold. She had heard the stories, ancient tales whispered among her elders about evil spirits that could possess the living, driving them to madness and destruction. But she had never truly believed them — not until now.

The air grew heavier, and the atmosphere in the house shifted. The light that had once filled the room now seemed dim, as though the world was losing its color. Her father stood, his movements jerky and unnatural, his face contorted with an expression that was not his own. Zuru's breath caught in her throat as she backed away, her mind desperately trying to grasp the reality of what was happening.

And then, it spoke.

A voice that was not her father’s — deep, guttural, and echoing with ancient malice. “You are mine now,” it said, and Zuru felt the weight of those words settle in her chest like a heavy stone.

Her father’s body trembled, and the glow of the mark on his neck grew brighter. Zuru's heart raced as she turned to her brothers, who were now emerging from the hallway. But something was different about them too. Their eyes were vacant, distant, as though they, too, were no longer entirely themselves. They had seen it — they knew what was happening — but they were powerless to stop it.

Zuru's first brother, always the bravest, took a step forward. “Father…?” he called, his voice faltering.

Before he could even take another step, the spirit inside their father moved with terrifying speed. A force, unnatural and powerful, exploded from her father’s body, throwing her brother back across the room. He crashed into the wall with a sickening thud, his body crumpling to the floor like a ragdoll. The spirit laughed — a low, cruel sound that chilled Zuru's very bones.

The second brother rushed to his side, but as he touched him, the same thing happened — the spirit moved, and in the blink of an eye, her second brother too had been consumed. The mark on their necks began to form, both brothers now standing eerily still, their bodies moving like puppets controlled by invisible strings.

Her family was falling apart before her eyes. The mark, the glowing symbols of possession, spread rapidly, like a plague. The spirit was claiming them one by one, leaving them hollow, stripped of their will. Zuru wanted to scream, to run, to fight — but she was paralyzed, caught in the grasp of a nightmare.

And then, as if the spirit sensed her fear, it turned its attention to her...
