Aprende a recorrer tu camino, aprende a conocerte y a controlarte.

Hello, I hope you are all doing well. Today, I wanted to talk to you about a condition that affects me on many occasions, and that is anxiety.

In recent years, conditions such as anxiety have been given more priority, however, I feel that there are still people who do not fully understand what that word encompasses. Anxiety is not just about the crises that occur at certain times.

When a person has anxiety, it can manifest itself at any time of the day, either through intrusive thoughts or, in some cases, physical pain and discomfort. Some symptoms of anxiety that I see in myself are: overthinking things, having intrusive thoughts all the time, thinking that something bad is always going to happen, imagining thousands of different scenarios for a single moment (and they never end well); but I also have physical symptoms, such as shortness of breath, rapid heartbeat, body tremors, stomach pain, chest pain. At the beginning of this whole process, I thought I was really sick with some heart condition, that I was about to have a heart attack, and the truth is that I could have caused one myself, because my blood pressure rose enormously due to the fear itself. But after a lot of work and research and visiting several doctors, and all my tests coming back fine, I understood that my body is fine, I'm just somatising things that my brain can't contain or control.

1000189554.png

And yes, we know that dealing with physical illnesses is really bad; there are many people who unfortunately have a very hard time dealing with some illness in their body. But we also cannot forget that dealing with anxiety can be just as difficult, especially if we do not learn to control our thoughts (which is not easy at all).

1000189556.png

For example, as I write this post, I am dealing with a situation that I haven't experienced in several years (being completely alone at night in an apartment) and my mind is racing with thousands of thoughts that, instead of calming me down, are trying to upset me. Perhaps for most people, spending a night alone is no big deal, and for me it wasn't at other times in my life, but right now it affects me a lot. On the other hand, I also know that writing relaxes me, so I am writing this post to give my mind something to occupy itself with and divert my attention away from those thoughts a little. So here I am, partly focused on writing, and partly with a scenario generator running at full speed (it's something like this: your fingers are working to capture what one part of your brain is emitting, while the other part of your brain sends an alert: If the building collapses right now, you'll be buried under a lot of rubble and no one will know you're there). But instead of one thought, there are hundreds.

1000189555.png

And if someone saw me right now, they wouldn't notice anything strange about me, they wouldn't know anything about what's going on in my mind; and that makes these situations more difficult to understand; because the truth is, unless I have very noticeable physical symptoms, no one would know what I'm going through, I would have to express it (which doesn't happen very often).

I know that everyone in the same situation as me has a different way of self-regulating, but there is also the dilemma that sometimes, that normal way of regulating doesn't work, and that's when the problem gets worse. That is where the physical symptoms begin, where they are no longer just thoughts, but become realities, and you enter a spiral of sensations that is difficult to escape, as well as difficult to explain.

On the other hand, unfortunately there are many (not all) mental health professionals who do not know how to deal with an anxious patient. I had the opportunity to see a psychologist who sadly falls into the group that I feel does not know how to deal with these situations and lacks the empathy to do so. You see, when you realise that your body is fine and the problem comes from somewhere deeper, it is very difficult to seek help. It is very difficult to realise that you are not going to be able to get out of this on your own, and deciding to take a step forward is too difficult. If you finally decide to open up to someone and express your feelings and thoughts, you hope to find someone who can listen to you in the best way possible and try to understand you. But if instead you find a person who is just sitting on their side of the desk, who doesn't even look at you, and with only three questions that you have to answer with the options they give you, they refer you to a psychiatrist, literally telling you that only psychotropic drugs can help you; believe me, that step you took is forgotten, and you fall back to square one, but this time with another negative thought: "I can't go back to a psychologist because they won't understand me"

1000189557.png

The process is not easy; in fact, sometimes we see it as impossible, and there are days when you will be fine, but then out of nowhere, you find yourself back in the middle of the storm. However, it is good to remember that the path is not linear; there are lows, highs, and curves. For some, the path is shorter but much more difficult, and for others, it is longer but also easier to navigate. Learn to walk your path, learn to know yourself and control yourself.

Finally, I would like to make an observation: if you are a psychologist and you are reading this, your human warmth is the best thing we can receive in a session. It is not about getting completely involved in your patient's life, but about listening to them and making them feel understood and eager to return because they are going to get better. Remember that we come to you in the hope that you will help us organise and manage our thoughts.

On the other hand, if you have suffered from these symptoms, how do you regulate yourself? What techniques do you use to control yourself and not fall into a downward spiral?

Thank you very much for reading my moment of catharsis.
