Have you seen Facebook's announcement for it's new upcomming cryptocurrency project called "Libra"?

Here is the white paper:
https://libra.org/en-US/white-paper/

After reading this white paper I have a creeping feeling that it won't be a true cryptocurrency like we all in this industry are accustomed to see.

The reasons are many. I just want to mention some of the most obvious ones:

They say it is the decentralized cryptocurency. But wait, it will be governed by the Libra Association. And the founding members of this association will of course be major global corporations.

Will it give power to the people? I don't think so. Right now they state it will be permissioned blockchain.

However, the industry standard is of course permissionless blockchain.

Can any individual mine or mint Libra? Of course not. Only qualified custodians can.

Even though it looks very nice in the white paper in theory, in practice, this might be another form control major corporations have over the population.

But I think there might come good things from this project too. As people realize that this Libra is not a real crypto which would trully empower them, they will start looking into projects that can.

In a sense, Libra can be an eye opener for an average person to the world of cryptocurrency.

That's how they can discover Steem, among other coins.

Also don't forget the infamous Facebook's ban of crypto ads. Their argument was that they want to protect people from scam while in reality they were secretly working on their own "cryptocurrency".
