Three Days in Büyükada Part 2: Our First Hour on the Island (eng-tr)
When we arrived in Büyükada, our little holiday finally started to feel real. After almost two hours on the ferry, we got off at the beautiful Büyükada pier. The weather was wonderful. The sky was very blue, the air was fresh, and the island was already full of people. We decided not to go directly to our house. First, we wanted to spend some time in the center and enjoy the atmosphere.
Büyükada’ya vardığımızda küçük tatilimiz sonunda gerçekten başlamış gibi hissettirdi. Yaklaşık iki saatlik vapur yolculuğundan sonra güzel Büyükada İskelesi’nde indik. Hava harikaydı. Gökyüzü masmaviydi, hava ferah ve ada şimdiden oldukça hareketliydi. Hemen eve gitmek istemedik. Önce merkezde biraz vakit geçirip adanın havasını hissetmek istedik.
The first thing I noticed was the holiday atmosphere. There were small stands near the center and people were selling different things. Some sold food, some snacks, some local products and souvenirs. It almost felt like a small fair. Of course, Büyükada welcomes many tourists, so there are many small businesses trying to offer something to visitors.
İlk dikkatimi çeken şey tatil havasıydı. Merkezde küçük küçük stantlar vardı ve herkes farklı şeyler satıyordu. Yiyecekler, atıştırmalıklar, yerel ürünler ve hediyelik eşyalar vardı. Küçük bir panayır gibiydi. Büyükada çok sayıda turist ağırladığı için burada ziyaretçilere bir şeyler sunmaya çalışan çok sayıda küçük işletme var.
We walked around the small streets for a while. There were restaurants, cafes, souvenir shops and many little corners to discover. The center was crowded, but it did not bother me. Maybe because we knew that soon we would leave the busy part of the island and go to our quiet house by the sea.
Bir süre küçük sokaklarda dolaştık. Restoranlar, kafeler, hediyelik eşya dükkânları ve keşfedilecek küçük köşeler vardı. Merkez kalabalıktı ama bu beni rahatsız etmedi. Sanırım birazdan adanın kalabalık kısmından çıkıp deniz kenarındaki sakin evimize gideceğimizi biliyorduk.
Of course, after the ferry trip, we needed tea and coffee. We had not ordered anything on the ferry, so we found a Mado near the sea and sat down. I ordered tea and my friend ordered coffee. And honestly, the view was more important than the drinks.
Tabii ki vapur yolculuğundan sonra çay ve kahve zamanı gelmişti. Vapurda hiçbir şey içmemiştik. Bu yüzden denize yakın bir Mado bulup oturduk. Ben çay söyledim, arkadaşım kahve aldı. Ama açıkçası içeceklerden çok manzaramız güzeldi.
From our table, we could see Istanbul across the sea. Ferries were coming and going. People were arriving on the island, and others were going back to the city. Istanbul was just across the water with all its buildings and crowds, but we were sitting on an island drinking tea in peace. I really loved this feeling.
Masamızdan denizin karşı tarafındaki İstanbul’u görebiliyorduk. Vapurlar gelip gidiyordu. Birileri adaya geliyor, birileri İstanbul’a dönüyordu. İstanbul bütün binaları ve kalabalığıyla hemen karşımızdaydı ama biz bir adada huzur içinde çay içiyorduk. Bu his gerçekten çok hoşuma gitti.
The pier building also caught my attention. It has a very lovely island feeling. Then we walked toward the famous clock tower. I quickly learned that the clock tower is almost a meeting point on the island. When you ask someone for directions, there is a good chance you will hear, “near the clock tower.”
İskele binası da çok dikkatimi çekti. Tam bir ada havası var. Daha sonra meşhur saat kulesine doğru yürüdük. Saat kulesinin adada neredeyse bir buluşma noktası olduğunu hemen öğrendim. Birine adres sorduğunuzda büyük ihtimalle “saat kulesinin orada” cevabını duyuyorsunuz.
The streets around the clock tower were very cute. There were flowers, old style buildings, cafes and shops. At some moments, the island reminded me of places I had visited before. A little bit of Bosnia, a little bit of Tbilisi, and maybe even a little bit of Greece. I have never been to Italy, but somehow some streets also gave me an Italian holiday feeling.
Saat kulesinin çevresindeki sokaklar çok tatlıydı. Çiçekler, eski tarz binalar, kafeler ve dükkânlar vardı. Bazı anlarda bana daha önce gördüğüm yerleri hatırlattı. Biraz Bosna, biraz Tiflis ve belki biraz Yunanistan. İtalya’ya hiç gitmedim ama bazı sokaklar bana nedense İtalya’da tatil yapıyormuşum hissi de verdi.
Maybe that is one of the nicest things about Büyükada. It feels familiar but also different. You are still in Istanbul, but life suddenly feels slower. There are no normal city streets full of cars. Instead, you see people walking, bicycles and the small electric island vehicles.
Belki de Büyükada’nın en güzel taraflarından biri bu. Hem tanıdık hem de farklı hissettiriyor. Hâlâ İstanbul’dasınız ama hayat bir anda yavaşlıyor. Normal şehir trafiği yok. Bunun yerine yürüyen insanlar, bisikletler ve küçük elektrikli ada araçları var.
Before going to the house, we also needed to shop. We were going to stay for a few days, so we went to a market and bought water, food and some basic things for the house. Of course, when two women shop for a short holiday, somehow it still becomes many bags. When I looked at our bags later, I laughed a little.
Eve gitmeden önce alışveriş de yapmamız gerekiyordu. Birkaç gün kalacağımız için markete girip su, yiyecek ve ev için gerekli birkaç şey aldık. Tabii iki kadın kısa bir tatil için alışveriş yapınca nedense yine bir sürü poşet oluyor. Sonra poşetlere bakınca biraz güldüm.
We were also getting hungry. Then we saw cağ kebab and thought, why not. It looked like a good quick meal before going to the house. Unfortunately, this became the first bad surprise of our trip.
Bu arada acıkmaya da başlamıştık. Cağ kebabını görünce hemen, neden olmasın dedik. Eve gitmeden önce hızlı ve güzel bir şey yeriz diye düşündük. Ama maalesef bu tatilimizin ilk kötü sürprizi oldu.
The food was really bad. I do not like being too negative about food, but this one was honestly difficult to eat. The taste was strange, it was expensive, and we both regretted buying it. I think it might have been one of the worst kebabs I have ever eaten. When we finally reached the house, one of the first things we wanted was mineral water.
Yemek gerçekten çok kötüydü. Yemek konusunda çok negatif konuşmayı sevmiyorum ama bunu yemek gerçekten zordu. Tadı garipti, pahalıydı ve ikimiz de aldığımıza pişman olduk. Sanırım hayatımda yediğim en kötü kebaplardan biriydi. Eve vardığımızda ilk istediğimiz şeylerden biri soda oldu.
Still, one bad meal could not ruin that beautiful first hour on the island. We had already seen the pier, walked through the streets, visited the clock tower, had tea and coffee by the sea and done our shopping. Büyükada had already given us many little memories.
Yine de kötü bir yemek adadaki o güzel ilk saatimizi bozamadı. İskele’yi görmüş, sokaklarda dolaşmış, saat kulesine gitmiş, deniz manzarasında çay ve kahvemizi içmiş ve alışverişimizi yapmıştık. Büyükada daha ilk saatten bize birçok küçük anı vermişti.
Around noon, we finally went to find the island minibus. As expected, it was near the clock tower. Our colorful blue vehicle was waiting there. With all our bags, we got on and started the next part of our little journey.
Öğle saatlerine doğru sonunda ada minibüsümüzü bulmaya gittik. Tahmin edebileceğiniz gibi o da saat kulesinin yakınındaydı. Mavi, rengârenk aracımız bizi bekliyordu. Bütün poşetlerimizle bindik ve küçük yolculuğumuzun bir sonraki kısmı başladı.
And this is where I will stop Part 2. In the next post, I will finally show you where we stayed. I think that was the moment when I completely fell in love with this little holiday because our house was directly by the sea. The view was much better than I had expected.
