Today was supposed to be a much-needed break. You know, one of those glorious public holidays where you get to sleep in, binge-watch your favorite shows, or simply lounge around without the weight of work on your shoulders. But, alas, that wasn't the case for me. I found myself dragging myself out of bed early, getting dressed, hitting the road and heading to the office.

The reason? A skeleton staff was required to keep things running, and unfortunately, my name was on the list. I couldn't help but feel a pang of frustration as I watched everyone else enjoy their day off while I trudged to work. The traffic was lighter because it was a public holiday, I'll give it that, but the sense of unfairness lingered.

As I settled into my cubicle, the emptiness of the office felt almost surreal. The usual chatter and bustle were replaced by an eerie silence. I tried to dive into my tasks, but my mind kept wandering to all the fun things I could be doing instead. The meetings were fewer, but the work didn't seem to diminish just because it was a holiday.

The hours ticked by at a glacial pace. Every time I glanced at the clock, it seemed like time was standing still, time was just so slower than usual, maybe it's because i was always looking at the clock. I found myself counting down the minutes until my shift ended, dreaming of the moment I could leave the office behind and reclaim my day.

To make matters worse, my usual lunch break motivator was nowhere to be found. No friendly chatter or shared laughs over a cup of coffee. It was just me, my coffee, and the hollow office space.

As the day finally drew to a close, I packed up my things and headed home, feeling drained. The satisfaction of having gotten through the day didn't quite compensate for the loss of what could have been a relaxing, rejuvenating day off. Tomorrow can't come soon enough.

Despite the grumble, I know these occasional holiday shifts are part of the job. Still, it doesn't hurt to dream of a day when the office is closed, and I get to enjoy a peaceful public holiday like everyone else. Maybe next holiday.
