The pandemic distracted us from a lot of other pressing issues troubling our present world, but it seems things will go back to normal soon and we will revert back to our unfinished battles. One of these wars we have fought endlessly is deforestation and massive land movement which is affecting plants and animals alike as well as complicating things for humanity's well being.
Read this small narrative that captures what deforestation does to other organisms:
Imagine yourself being a small animal, You have just moved into your new house beneath the perfect tree along with your siblings and family. Looking around, you see nothing but green forest and know you can find plenty of food and live happily with your family. But suddenly, you hear a loud sound that you haven't heard before, and then a thunderous crash. One by one , the trees are being cut down by people, and yours is next ! In no time, that forest has no trees left and your family, yourself alongside dozens of friends have no where else, no place to relocate to.
According to stats, about 65% to 70% of terrestrial plants and animals lives in these large and sparse forest areas, and they would not survive in any other kind of habitat if relocation was ever an option. These are living organisms too like humans and they do not have the luxury of relocating, moving to a new places to continue their lives. In fact, over half of the displaced organisms(animals, birds, insects fungi, bacteria etc) will die off in that process.
No matter our quest to build more houses, roads, factories, schools etc these green vegetation, plants and trees are equally important for all life forms on our planet,as we cut more trees and green vegetations down in large numbers, we are committing crimes to ourselves through this act of deforestation.
Aquatic and Rainforest habitats are two of the oldest ecosystems on this planet and to replace one would be a lifetime blunder, which we are already paying for these crimes with climate change and global warming.
Rainforest took thousands of years to form and we have almost wiped them all out over just a few decades into advanced civilization. How can we replenish these lushy and beautiful gift nature gave us with the current rapid deforestation rate? How could artificially cultivated green spaces serve Billions of lives roaming the planet?
To conclude, I think advancements in technology has offered us ways to halt these massive deforestation and land movement, if we do not look into alternative means now more than half of our plants and animals will become extinct in the next few years if we humans are still alive to witness these horror that we have caused!
