The whole band returned to the studio; there was a lot of work to be done, and it was the start of something big. They weren’t just there to rehearse anymore—they were there to decide which songs they would play next. Lucas set his pass down on the table and stared at it. “This is for real now,” he murmured, almost to himself.
Dani sat down on the couch with a defiant smile. Michelle plugged in her guitar. “The contest isn’t just any old thing. It’s not enough to play well; we have to make them remember us.” Stewie twirled a drumstick between his fingers. “So the question is, what do we want them to feel when they hear us?”
Lucas picked up his drum and played a couple of notes, almost timidly. “We could do something melodic that starts off calm and then builds up. Something that hits hard at the end.” Dani shook her head, though not entirely in disagreement. “Yeah, but it needs power right from the start. Something that makes the audience sit up and take notice as soon as we begin.”
Michelle stepped forward. “What if we do both? An emotional intro, and then we go all out. Like telling a story—not many bands have done that.” Stewie smiled slightly. “I like that—like there are highs, lows, moments to breathe, and moments to tear it all apart.” Lucas looked up and agreed. “A song that starts with doubt and ends with confidence.”
For a moment, no one spoke, since they all agreed and it could work. Michelle played a stronger chord this time. Dani followed along, tapping her leg gently. Stewie set the tempo with his drumsticks on the edge of a chair. Lucas closed his eyes and played.
A great sound began to take shape; it wasn’t perfect, but it had something unique that represented them, and in that instant, none of them were thinking about the contest anymore. They were creating something that could take them there. That afternoon in the studio, a new song began to take shape, and with it, a stronger version of the band.
